Windows 7 Partition Hard Drives

One excellent feature I found in Windows 7, may be in Vista too, is the easy with which we can partition our hard drive. Though, this can be achieved using partition managers like Easeus, Norton Partition Magic, Paragon etc, the feasibility is provided in Windows 7. To do so, click on Start and type “compmgmt.msc” in the search box or go to Computer Management, through Administrative Tools.

Click on Storage ----> Disk Management in the left pane.

Create Free Space:

Select the required partition with a lot of free space .

• Right click the selected partition, and select “Shrink Volume…” from the context menu.
• This takes some time, to gather the statistics of the partition.
• Then a window pops up showing the shrink or free space details.

 

 

There you can enter the amount of space to shrink. Please read the warning below the text box, before you give a value.

Although there are other options like “Extend Volume…”, that option is greyed out.

 

 

Resize/Move a partition:

To do this, I used a free partitioning tool called, Easeus Partition Manager. The Home version is free and you can download it from here. http://www.partition-tool.com/personal.htm. There are several options you can do, and they are provided on the left pane.

Select a partition in the image,on the right pane, where you can see all the hard drives and their partitions.

You can see a dark line around the selected partition.

Now select “Resize/Move Partition” option in the left pane. Then a window pops up , as here in the screen shot.Just drag the arrow to the left to reduce or shrink, and create free space.

Then, you can see the changes in the combo boxes below, as you do this. Click OK.

Now you have a list under “Operations Pending” with some operations to do. Just click Apply on the left plane and the desired changes take place after some processing.

Now if you want to create a partition in the free space, you can click “free” or “unallocated” space in the image on the right pane and click “create partition” on the left pane. Apply and whew, the partition is created. You can give a label etc. to the new partition.

Similarly for adding free space to the adjacent partition, just do a resize for that partition and you can see the free space before or after the partition. Just drag the arrow as shown before and apply. Hola! You increased the size of your partition.
